Why do some managers get promoted ahead of their colleagues and some sales teams do better than the competitive?
The answer is found initially in their power to connect and persuade - and it all begins with a trusting first impression,
If you illogical, but it is human nature. First impression set the tne fo success more often than class, credentials or education.
In fact, experts estimate that as little as 15% of your financial success comes from your skills and knowledge, while 85% comes from your ability to connect with other people, generate trust and respect, and fire their imagination.
The code of connection
There is an order and a process to communicating face-to-face. And like everything, it begins with trust.
Successful people do certain things in certain order, while people who find life and work a strunggle either do not follow the procecss or do things in the wrong order.
People send and receive all kinds of mixed messages that motivate andor demotivates others, often without realising it.
That is why some people naturally engage and inspire trust, while others confuse, smother enthusiasm, stifle curiousity, short-circuit feedback and generate negative attitudes in the workplace.
The drive to connect
A recent study done for the European Unio by Dr Theodore Zeldin of Oxford University revealed that people who were not connected to their work functioned at about 20 to 25 % of their full potential compared to those who were.
Undoubtedly, leadership is critical to employee engagement and productivity, but the quality of people's relationships lies at the very foundation of activity-sharing within groups. Without quality relationships, there can be no employee engagement, job satisfaction or hapiness.
What drive most people to go beyond the call of duty is the chance to do work which they believe is important and to do it with people whom they trust and enjoy being with. When this occurs, they experience a sense of worth, usefulness and purpose.
Simple but, when people like one another, they work better, time flies and there is a strong foundation for cooperation, productivity and fun.
Here's what you should take note of if you want to connect in business in 90 seconds or less:
1. There is no such things as failure - there is only feedback.
2. The meaning of your communicationlies in the response you get.- You are 100% responsible for your communication, whether it succeeds or fails.
3. Experience has a structure. - All behaviours follow a pattern, and you change the results.
4. People work perfectly.- The resources an individual needs to effect change are already within him.
5. The mind and the body are one system. - You are credible when your body language, voice tone and words are all saying the same thing.
6. When people like you, they tend to see the best in you and look for opportunities to say "yes". - When they do not, the opposite is true. They make that decision in the first two seconds of seeing you or hearing you, if it is on the phone.
7. People like people like themselves.- We tend to trust, like and feel comfortable with people with whom we share commom traits.
