::In a highly stressed environment, effective communication can start to slide when you need it most.Often we don't realise that the basic niceties can help to keep things bearable in a crisis::
We have all experienced thise unbearable days, weeks, or even months where the workload seems impossible and there is no light at the end of the tunnel. No matter how smart smart, fast or late you may be working you just can't seem to get on top of your workload.
You become increasingly irritable and find that you are no longer the approachable, helpful friend in the office but the overbearing one in the corner who is no longer capable of commoncourtesies like please or thank you.
These stress-filled times are precisely when you need to step back and reassess your communication style and how it impacts the team around you. Common courtesies and a well-considered, polite approach are vital, and will determine whether you find a solution or create an even greater problem.
Tell-tale signs of stress are a high-pitched tone, raised voice, and rushed, nonsensical instructions. Unclear instructions will not only result in resistance from your team members.
No one responds well to rudeness or agressive behaviour. If you are looking to progress further in your career, learn to control your emotions. Everyone has their own way of dealing with stressfulsituations but team members will respond better to those instructions that are delivered clearly and calmly. The staff will be more receptive of you and respect you, and be more willing to help out with future requests - you will never know when you need a friend!
Think positively about the job that needs to get done without doubting your abilities. Expect success at the end of each day. Being able to work well and make good decisions under pressure will enchanceyour reoutation for goodwill and positive leadership.
If you feel you are drowning under the workload, it is your responsibility to speak up. Let your seniors know that you are struggling to keep up. If you are in a position where you are leading a team, learn todelegate effectively. Set realistic deadlines and be mindful of your team's workload.
Remember that times of crisis, such as a last minute deadline set by demanding client, or a shuffle in the team, or change in upper management, are opportunity to cope under stress will not go unnoticed. If you feel it does, don't be afraid to make your achievements known!
Stress in the workplace is unavoidable as we are confronted with challenging situations all the time. Instead of running away from the situation and wasting precious time worrying about what needs to get done, turn the situation to your advantage and make stress work for you.
Recognise that you are feeling under pressure and then communicate clearly and rationally with your team members. This way you can remain positive, work on guaranteeing success, and ensure that your workplace ensure that your workplace remains a happy, effective, and manageable environment.
